Sumi Kailasapathy Interview with Boston Lanka
DESCRIPTION
In this interview, Sumi Kailasapathy explains how and why her campaign messaging for City Council Member of Ann Arbor draws from her experience living through the armed violence in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. She speaks on how these experiences are what drives her politics, particularly in advocating on behalf of historically marginalized communities. The interview helps demonstrate how Sumi Kailasapathy’s feminism is based on seeking commonalities and solidarities with other communities who share a common experience of oppression. This interview is an important artifact and contribution to the SAADA Archival Creators Fellowship Project on Ilankai Tamil Feminism because it documents how a Tamil feminist leader applied her theoretical and experiential knowledge towards a successful run for formal elected office in the United States, which is a watershed moment in the history of Ilankai Tamil Feminism.
