Oral history interview with Hasina Choudhury, conducted by Philadelphia Fellow Maha Rahman.
Hasina Choudhury has lived in Philadelphia for more than twenty years. She was born in Karachi, West Pakistan, and moved to East Pakistan with her family. She lived through the independence war of Bangladesh in 1971 as an eleven-year-old child, during which time she was an eyewitness to Pakistani army raids as she lived in the army cantonment area. In independent Bangladesh, she grew up in a close community in the DOHS cantonment-Banani area of the capital city Dhaka. She was raised by her mother, who brought up four children on her own after the death of Hasina’s father. In this interview, she reflects on how her mother’s decisions affected her life, what it was like growing up as a girl and then a young woman in a changing Bangladesh, her relationship with family, and her career as a successful architect.
