Land Commission Meeting in Northern Sri Lanka

DESCRIPTION
Mahendran Thiruvarangan was part of a land commission initiated by an umbrella organization that works on land related issues known as People's Action for Right to Land. This photo was taken when a Muslim woman in Mullaitivu spoke about the challenges she faces in re-claiming her land following her return to Mullaitivu. She and the entire Muslim population in the North was evicted from the region in 1990 by the LTTE. The Muslim evictions were discussed in detail during the interview with Mahendran Thiruvarangan for the Archival Creators Fellowship project on Ilankai Tamil Feminism, for which he is also an advisor. The discussion of Muslim evictions illuminated reasons as to why the politics of ethnonationalism was a limited framework from which to actualize justice for Sri Lanka's Tamil and Muslim communities.
