RD Oral History Interview
DESCRIPTION
RD is a pseudonym used to protect the identity of the interviewee. RD is an Afghan woman who was recently resettled in Centreville, Virginia. She talks about her life in Afghanistan prior the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021. She shares her experience as an Afghan woman who grew up in Iran and returned to Afghanistan after the fall of Taliban in the early 2000s. She shares about her memories of Afghanistan and her adjustment to a new life in the U.S.
RD believes that the image of Afghan women portrayed in the media isn't reflective of the reality. She and many women like her fought for women's inclusion in decision making about the future of Afghanistan.
RD worked and owned a car which made it easy for her to travel around Afghanistan. She talks about the misconception that Afghan women aren't independent. She struggled with societal norms but bravely broke them to create her own definition.
