Oral History Interview with Raj Kumar Syal



DESCRIPTION
Raj Kumar Syal came from a little village, Bilga, in Punjab. After completing his undergraduate degree from Punjab, India, he moved to USA to study engineering. His undergraduate degree in engineering was from Texas A&M, and Master's degree from the University of Houston. He started work with the Texas Highways and continued working there for 45 years. He worked with the construction of Highways. At first, it was only a two lane Highway, with no shoulders, now we can see the difference! He was involved in every main project of the Texas highways. Raj Syal found the people very honest and helpful when he first came here. His aim was to unite the Indian community. At first they met in the Univ. of Houston auditorium, then they built a temple. His wish of having a place where all could meet regardless of race or religion and celebrate, was fulfilled with the establishment of the India Culture Center. Mr. Sayal has one daughter who is a dentist, a son, a medical doctor, and another son who is a businessman. He and his wife live in Woodlands, Texas.
