Letter in Gurmukhi from Bhagat Singh Thind to his younger brother Jagat Singh, dated May 3, 1919 and written from Linnton, Oregon. In the letter, Thind explains that he has requested his father to arrange Jagat Singh's marriage. Thind also asks his brother to give his friend Sewa Ram an included letter written in English. My dear younger brother Jagat Singh Ji,
My Greetings to you. With Waheguru’s grace, I am hale and hearty. I pray for your well-being daily. Dear brother, I have sent two letters to Daddy. This third one is addressed to you. I have already sent this year Rupees 1000 to Daddy in two installments, on March 4 and April 17. Please let me know when the money is received. After some time I will send more. I have requested Daddy to arrange your marriage. God willing, shortage of funds will not be allowed to stand in the way. It is important that there is a lady in the house to take care of the kitchen. The guests must be offered proper food and hospitability. Therefore, as long this matter is not settled I will be unable to return home. Have patience, Waheguru will make us meet. You stay home. Do not go anywhere until I write to you. Attend to Daddy nicely. And if you need anything write to me.
Please give to Sewa Ram, my friend, the letter written in English. Also give him my photo (in which I am wearing military uniform). I am sending the same to you. Humbly greet Dad for me, and hug brother, Rulia Singh for me.
You can write in Urdu and Gurmukhi. Please always write your letter to me yourself. I can read both these languages.
